The ability of being silent is highly regarded in Norway.

Norwegian sisters and brothers often live together at small places in Norway. They never marry others, but in many terms become "man and wife."

In July 2008 three members of The Hungry Hearts - Tonje, Edith and Sofia went to Leknes to make a film about the Norwegian silence and the close relationship between sisters and brothers living together. Leknes is a small place in the Northern part of Norway where the sun never goes down.

Many Norwegian feature films describe the Norwegian silence and this “marriage” of sisters and brothers.

In some parts of Norway there is a tendency for non-verbal, lonely Norwegian men to look for Russian ladies to marry. There is a rumour saying that Russian ladies are easier to live with than Norwegian ladies.

In this film a Portuguese stranger is sitting at the kitchen table together with the sisters. The Portuguese lady has arrived the day before with her suitcase, as a response to an advertisement where the sisters asked for a housekeeper.

The main focus is the non-verbal communication pattern.

The Norwegian lack of hospitality and the way we “buy” and abuse poor people looking for a better life is one of many subtexts in this film.

A big Honkytonk-thanks to Ragnhild Lie who found us a very nice place to live and also let us use the “Kunsthagen” to shoot this film.

Actresses: Edith Roth Gjevjon as sisters and Sofia Varino
Composer of music: Tonje and Edith Gjevjon

In 2006 Tonje, Edith and Sofia tried to get from London to the seaside of England. But this was in June, and all the pale English families had summer vacation at the seaside, so there were no available rooms for us. The only available hotel in this pat of England was in Birmingham. In this hotel we made “In the Closet”.

Synopsis of In the Closet: Betty comes home from work to have her lunch…

Tragic Magic

Photographer and visual director: Tonje Gjevjon
Composer of music and singer: Lisa Dillan
Actresses: Lisa Dillan as Tragic Cowboy and Edith Roth Gjevjon as magic silent lady. Line Halvorsen and Edith Roth Gjevjon as synchronic dolls

The ladies helping the magicians inspired the making of this film. They appear as fearless, sophisticated, silent and unreachable objects leaving their bodies and life into the magician’s hands.

The magician has created an image of himself as magic and mysterious.

This film goes into these characters and tries to absorb the extreme pattern these traditional roles are building upon.

Hospital of Love

Running time: 10 minutes
Visual director: Tonje Gjevjon
Photographer: Tonje Gjevjon, Jan Steinum and

A little woman with big red lips surrounding her mouth is talking about Lulu and Lolita. She tells us that Lulu and Lolita work at the Hospital of Love. At the Hospital of Love there are a lot of women. Some of them are waiting for the customers, or ”the lonely dogs” For some, Hospital of Love is a whorehouse, for others it is a psychosis, a dream. The women are living their lives in this house waiting for the customers or for something else...
They reveal their secrets and dreams through dance, a clairvoyant lamp, songs and whispering words. Hospital of Love is a surrealistic art-film performed in a theatrical language.

Running time: 07:00 minutes

This work is based upon the story of the 17 year old girl Dua Khalil Aswad who was stoned to death in an honor killing before the world in 2006. No one dared to interfere and no one tried to save her. Spectators actually filmed the stoning with mobile phone cameras. Her "crime" was falling in love with a man with other religious belief. In some religions and cultures death penalty is a natural and accepted method to punish human beings for behavior that their society find unacceptable. Mostly women suffer the most violent punish methods. This film is our comment.

The music and pictures are based upon the human emotions, in this case a woman's emotions: longing and desire, the search for a true expression of love, and the energy these feelings raise.
